George Gilder on the huge Data Center-s being built by the big Web players (Google, Microsoft, AskCom, Yahoo, etc.). In every era, the winning companies are those that waste what is abundant (Abundance) – as signalled by precipitously declining prices – in order to save what is scarce. Google has been profligate with the surfeits of data storage and backbone bandwidth. Conversely, it has been parsimonious with that most precious of resources, users' patience.

FriendFeed uses MySQL but with no schema. Our datastore stores Schema-Less bags of properties (e.g., JSON objects or Python dictionaries (Hash Table)). The only required property of stored entities is id, a 16-byte UUID. The rest of the entity is opaque as far as the datastore is concerned. We can change the "schema" simply by storing new properties. We index data in these entities by storing indexes in separate MySQL tables. If we want to index three properties in each entity, we will have three MySQL tables - one for each index. (Scalability) (more)

Brian Watson says: *From a software delivery perspective, the concept of a Pro Ject has run its course. It’s time for companies to rethink their IT strategy to focus on smaller units of value (sound familiar?) (Agile Software Development) vs. bloated large-scale collections of stuff (defined start/end date, scope of work, yada yada). (more)

Just noticed that The Wife's IPad Calendar Data Synch from Google Calendar hasn't updated in ages. There doesn't seem to be any way to trigger a manual synch, but other stuff is auto-synching fine. (more)

Twitter will start supporting country-level Censorship. As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content. Until now, the only way we could take account of those countries’ limits was to remove content globally. Starting today, we give ourselves the ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country — while keeping it available in the rest of the world. (more)
